Greenwood Cemetery, New Orleans, Louisiana

Infrared City of the Dead

Christina Sautter June 24, 2016

Upon seeing Frank Aymami's infrared images, I fell in love with their ethereal, film-like quality. I also became fascinated with the way that infrared makes green leaves and grass look like snow and turns a bright blue sky black and shades of grey. I decided to try infrared photography and went straight to the expert himself, Frank, for lessons in one of his favorite venues - a New Orleans cemetery.

Salton Sea Beach, California

Post-Apocalyptic Salton Sea

Christina Sautter June 11, 2016

The first stop for us was Salton Sea Beach. Describing this community is quite difficult as I have never experienced anything like it. Before I visited, I was told that it “looks like an atomic bomb went off”; “people just appeared to have fled, leaving all of their possessions behind”; “salt encrusts everything”; and that is "HOT." Now having visited briefly, I would say all of that rings true. It was 114 degrees Fahrenheit when we arrived in the late afternoon and it truly looked like a bomb had gone off and then several floods had occurred. Graffiti adorned almost everything that remained. Furniture, appliances, old televisions, and other personal possessions sat outside to bake in the scorching sun.

Belize's lush environment is a photographer's dream.  Here are some of my favorite flower pictures that I took while spending the summer there.

Art Deco Airport

Christina Sautter June 4, 2015

The New Orleans Lakefront Airport, which officially opened in 1934, is an Art Deco gem. I could have spent hours in there absorbing the fine details and history. The Airport should be on every tourist's (and local's) "must see" list.

Fields of Wildflowers

Christina Sautter May 25, 2015

Fields of wildflowers are blooming in New Orleans City Park and my social media news feeds have been bursting with colorful wildflower photos. So my golden retriever, Marlin, and I checked them out for ourselves.

Flowers, Flowers, Flowers

It is Spring so that means more flower photographs! While I was in Omaha earlier this month, I visited the Lauritzen Gardens, a 100-acre oasis in the heart of the city.

Old Omaha

Christina Sautter May 23, 2015

I recently checked an item off my bucket list by attending the Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders Meeting in Omaha, Nebraska (I'll cover the meeting in a different post). This was my first visit to Omaha. I rented a house on Airbnb (another first) and my Airbnb host suggested that my first stop in Omaha be the Old District. Her suggestion was an excellent one as I was enthralled by all of the old brick buildings, cobblestone streets, and horse and carriages. Like many old areas in major cities the Old District in Omaha is now home to upscale restaurants, shops, and lofts. Here are some pictures of the Old District.  Stay tuned for more pictures from Omaha.

Central Texas Barbecue Road Trip

Christina Sautter May 17, 2015

I date a "displaced" Texan. This means that I hear about Texas . . . A LOT. I hear about the barbecue; the TexMex; the breakfast tacos; the kolaches; the Texas Water Safari; the big game ranches; the fishing off "Port A"; how Blue Bell Ice Cream is the best (in his words, "I would take my chances with listeria . . . it's that good!"); how much money Texas makes off oil; how Texas should secede from the United States; famous people born in Texas; famous people not born in Texas who have adopted Texas; how Houston is massive; how Austin is growing; the traffic in Austin; how the music in Austin is better than the music in New Orleans . . . the list goes on and on. You get the point.

Irises in the Swamp

Christina Sautter May 12, 2015

Approximately 40 minutes south of New Orleans lies Barataria Preserve which is part of the Jean Lafitte National Historic Park and Preserve (most refer to Barataria Preserve as the "Jean Lafitte Swamp" or just "Jean Lafitte"). Although the Jean Lafitte Swamp encompasses approximately 23,000 acres, one of the things it is most famous for are the giant blue irises which bloom each spring.

The Elusive Permit

Christina Sautter May 6, 2015

Every year fly fishing junkies travel to the beautiful Central American country of Belize for world class fly fishing on the flats.  Many of them are in search of the "grand slam" which means to catch a tarpon, a bonefish, and a permit all in one day.  Of the three, the permit is by far the most elusive and, in my opinion, the most beautiful.
